What Can Be Done About Replacing Laptop Keys

By George Teknia

Surveys say that there are statistically 4.3 laptop computers in each and every home in the United States. That means that most people have one of them and some have more than one. Obviously this is an important piece of equipment in the home, whether used for play or for work endeavors. However, it can get damaged and the key caps can come off.

Many people accept this as an inevitable part of owning a laptop and simply take their laptop into a computer repair store to get the problem sorted. But this throws up problems in itself as often it means leaving the laptop with them for days and running the risk of ending up handing over way too much money for upgrades and additional services that they don't actually need.

That will take about a week and you will not have the use of the computer in that time. And if you decide instead to send it back to the manufacturer, that is going to leave you without your computer for maybe six to eight weeks. And even though it will come back with a nice new keyboard, the wait may not be worth it at all.

If the warranty has expired (which is more than likely) the cost of the new keyboard from the manufacturer can cost hundreds of dollars. Some brave individuals try to avoid this cost by taking apart their keyboard to fix it. However, it's not all that simple - under each key are lots of tiny bits that need to go back exactly as they came out. Unless you are an expert you risk totally ruining the computer, and it's even more costly to have to replace the whole thing!

You may not realize that there are replacement laptop keys that can be purchased when they are damaged. That means they can easily be bought and replaced one key at a time. Actually, that is not only an inexpensive option but it also works quite well because it is highly likely that only one or two keys at a time will break.

In such cases, it is advisable to replace the keys individually without wasting much time and effort. By making use of the laptop keyboard key repair kits available at less than $5, individual users can reassemble the defective keys without going anywhere.

It's a simple fact that no matter what repair shops tell you in an attempt to make more money, laptop keys are easily replaceable. They get damaged so easily, as anyone with children, pets or a habit of using their laptop drunk will know! Sometimes it's simply wear and tear as they have to tolerate lots of use as well as being carried around, dropped, sat on and so on.

Computer repairers will recommend a full keyboard replacement each time, possibly trying to baffle the owner with technical jargon, simply because they make more profit that way. The mark up on changing a key or two isn't worth it for them. By knowing how simple it is to fix a broken key yourself you will not only save money but you won't have to go without your laptop for days or possibly weeks. We have all come to rely on our laptops and are lost without them!
